What does your device classification tell you about the OEM you need?
Device classification determines the depth of evidence you need, so classify before you shortlist. Malaysia follows a risk-based classification aligned with the ASEAN Medical Device Directive, running from low-risk Class A through to high-risk Class D, with higher classes requiring more rigorous conformity assessment by a registered conformity assessment body.
Practically, a Class A non-sterile accessory can often be produced by a competent general manufacturer with a sound QMS. A sterile, measuring or implantable product narrows the field sharply: you need validated sterilisation, environmental monitoring, biocompatibility data and usually a manufacturer that has already been through the assessment process for a similar device. Contract sterilisation is normal and acceptable — but the sterilisation provider then becomes a critical supplier who must be qualified, and the validation must cover your product family and packaging configuration, not merely the process in general.
Packaging and shelf-life deserve the same rigour. Sterile barrier systems need validated sealing parameters and seal-integrity testing, and shelf-life claims need stability or accelerated-ageing data behind them. How do MOQ, sampling and lead time reveal real capability?
Commercial terms are a diagnostic, not just a cost.
